Please update Inkscape package to 0.47pre2 - lots of bugs (at least 78) are fixed in this release since 0.47pre1, which is currently in Ubuntu 9.10 "Karmic". Look for example of fixed bug at

https://launchpad.net/inkscape/+milestone/0.47

78 bugs have status "Fix Committed", these bugs exists in 0.47pre1 and are fixed in 0.47pre2
Also lots of translations are updated since 0.47pre1
