Could you please also test with default (new) preferences, and attach the old preferences file if this affects performance of the text tool in 0.91 and 0.91+devel (ignore 0.48 for now)?

Steps:
1) quit all running instances of Inkscape
2) rename or move the existing preferences file
 ~/.config/inkscape/preferences.xml
3) launch inkscape again
4) repeat same tests
