Bug Description

OS is Linux Mint 13 Cinnamon with all system updates as of 05-03-2012. After embedding a PNG file into a new document and applying a filter to a single object, Inkscape produces a small notification dialog, but does not crash. The filter does not always perform successfully. It is possible to save the affected file, but the dialog box does not disappear.

Corrective step taken: Re-installed Inkscape. The behavior worsened, displaying nothing instead of the default grey gradient used by Linux Mint.

All that should be need to reproduce the bug is the latest updated version of Linux Mint 13 running Cinnamon and a blank, unsaved SVG with an embedded PNG file. The version is Inkscape 0.48.3.1 r9886.

Thank you.

Can you reproduce the bug with any filter and any PNG file? If not, could you please attach an example SVG file so that we can investigate?

Not reproduced with Inkscape 0.48.3.1 on
- OS X 10.7.4: 64bit, built without OpenMP support
- Mac OS X 10.5.8: 32bit, built without OpenMP support
(both available backends of Gtk+ 2.24.10 tested (X11, Quartz))

Not reproduced on OS X with current trunk builds either, with
- OpenMP support enabled at configure time and in the preferences

The error is agnostic of file and occurs regardless of the file being new or saved. This error does not occur in Windows 7 or Mac OS X (10.7.4 with the new XQuartz as of 06/09/2012), I have verified this has I have access to each of these systems. I cannot verify if this occurs in Windows XP as I don't have access to that OS.

Please understand that this appears to be a Linux Mint 13 Cinnamon issue only. I have not yet tested Linux Mint 13 MATE to determine if the error occurs.

Thank you.

I have the same problem. For some reason, this bug didn't come up in the search when I looked for Filter Dialog Blank. :-.

All my info is in Bug #1034529, including a screenshot.

I am also using Linux Mint Cinnamon.

Workaround in affected versions of Linux Mint + Cinnamon: disable desktop effects
(Main Menu -> Preferences -> Cinnamon Settings -> Effects -> Uncheck "Enable Desktop Effects")

Changed in inkscape:
status: New → Invalid

Apparently, the same problem exists on Debian (wheezy), I have
$ inkscape --version
Inkscape 0.48.3.1 r9886 (Dec 29 2012)

If I draw a small rectangle and then run a filter such as Bevels/Button, with normal
display mode, it takes an inordinate amount of time to complete. This is a defect,
but it's not the bug we're after. This bug is that no text is getting displayed in the
box.

In addition, sometimes, Inkscape freezes. And sometimes it logs this line:
(inkscape:3901): Gtk-CRITICAL **: IA__gtk_widget_get_visible: assertion `GTK_IS_WIDGET (widget)' failed
The time taken by the script, and related timeouts, might be the cause of both
misbehaviors.

IIRC, empty boxes used to show up on Windows XP as well, and it could be solved
by carefully reviewing the versions of Python and Gtk. (I'm not going to try that on
Debian.)
