I got the similar thing here.
I use a T43 laptop.
I dist-upgrade from breezy to dapper today. After a reboot, the startup stops at "loading the /root/ directory", then I did not see any other messages, my gdm started, and I can login, it seems strange. For example, the ipw2200 module is not loaded, and I can not get my wireless network card work.
