Correction: I didst-upgraded from Breezy to Dapper.
Upon doing this again, just to get the exact error message, I get:
Uncompressing Linux... Ok, booting the kernel.
Unable to find volume group "Ubuntu"
ALERT! /dev/mapper/Ubuntu-root does not exist. Dropping to a shell!

Busybox v1.01 (Debian 1:1.01-4ubuntu3) Built-in shell (ash)... etc
I have /boot on a seperate partition. I use ext3 for all the partitions. The /home and / are on LVM partitions.
The /boot/ directory has more than 201MB of free space on it.
The laptop is an Acer Travelmate 290 LMi, which used to work wonderfully under Breezy.
