I ran into this problem as well after dist-upgrading an IBM T42 from breezy -> dapper. Unfortunately because I'm clever, I forgot to make a backup of the broken initrd image before rerunning dpkg-reconfigure. However, just running dpkg-reconfigure was enough to fix the problem.
