I had the same probleme with a system dist-upgraded from breezy. There is
no /dev/mapper directory, and vgchange -a y says "No volume groups found".
Fortunately, I could still boot with an older kernel, and
dpkg-reconfigure linux-image-2.6.15-14-686 fixed it.
