I have already written an Ubuntu-specific tutorial concerning this issue and K/Ubuntu usplash as well, using only "hwinfo" program and traditional "vga=" instead of "video=" parameter. I haven't posted here earlier, because this bug already has had lots of comments. But since you've mentioned it...
