these 'new' problems sound very similar to the problems I have been having for quite a while now. I filled a bug report at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-media/+bug/426788 when I first had the problems. Unfortunatly, the bug report I have listed here is making only slow progress.
