Further to comment 18, when the shutdown option is selected from the "power cog" (shutdown -> shutdown), it instead logs me out and the shutdown option at the lightdm screen does nothing. What i have to do as a quick workaround is to use sudo halt, after logging into tty1 - but pc refuses to poweroff of its own accord anymore.
