I subscribed the Ubuntu Translations group, this is an i18n related issue, and I think it's worth to keep an eye on it.

Personally, I would prefer a solution like the on in gnome-panel. But if this needs to go in Lucid, IMHO it's necessary to take a decision in a short time and warn the translation teams.
