I am using ubuntu 9.1. Also, in case it is needed, below is the output

I had to use the Lock-screen panel applet as a temporary work around. To
restore the original indicator-applet-session configuration,, I had to
change to display manager to gdm and completely remove kdm. Now,
everything works as it was and as expected. It looks like there is a
conflict between kdm and the indicator-applet-session.
