The asymmetrical envelope is just the most visible example of a general problem: all icons are rendered worse in the status bar than they are in the open menu bar.
Here’s a magnified screenshot showing some of the other icons in the status bar (top) vs. the menu bar (bottom): the location reticle lines are blurrier, the triangles inside the Bluetooth icon are closed up, the strokes of the roaming “R” are 3 lighter pixels wide vs. 2 darker pixels, and so on. (Most menu bar icons in this screenshot are also darker, but that’s unrelated.)
I thought maybe the closed icons were being scaled to an unintended size. But the ones I measured are exactly the same number of pixels high. They’re just being rendered differently. So this is similar to bug 1472511.
