Bug Description

Description: Ubuntu 16.04 LTS
Release: 16.04

indicator-applet:
  Installed: (none)
  Candidate: 12.10.2+15.04.20141127.2-0ubuntu1
  Version table:
     12.10.2+15.04.20141127.2-0ubuntu1 500
        500 http://se.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu xenial/universe amd64 Packages

The network indicator sometimes shows the icon for wired connections and sometimes claims wifi without connection even though I'm consistently connected over wifi. I don't mean to say that it switches between these two or that always is wrong. But sometimes my connected to wifi symbol changes to wired. Other times it will change to the no connection wifi. The info is correct on boot, but switches over time, possibly after suspension.

Installing indicator-applet and indicator-network fixed it for me. I have no idea if this is suppsed to not be installed.

Nevermind, installing those packages does not fix the problem.
After a fresh boot, everything looks as expected. But after suspend the whole wifi part of network-manager might be gone again. Reastarting the network-manager service resets it.

The initial state of the indicator after login is correct BUT if I for example reconnect my USB adapter, the wifi state goes out of sync (i.e. the wifi would reconnect but the new 'connected' state is not reflected in the indicator (i.e. wifi list not shown and wifi icon does not appear)).

This is on a fresh 16.04 installation using a USB Wifi Adapter.

I'm being affected by both the bugs though I suspect they are same.

I installed indicator-applet and indicator-network and restarted the system but the problem persists and can be verified by turning wifi off and on. Going to uninstall indicator-applet and indicator-network. I hope the fix will be released soon.

John Pye (jdpipe) wrote :

The workaround, similar to "/etc/init.d/network-manager restart" does restore a network connection, but doesn't restore the indicator to a correct state.

Even though I remain connected via wifi, the indicator shows that I am connected via a wired connection. Before restarting the service, there is no connection at all. After restarting the service, the indicator shows no wireless network names in the indicator menu drop-down, even though I am connected via wifi (with no ethernet cables connected to my machine at all since the system was booted up).

Same thing here, on a freshly installed yakkety. Before that, on the same machine, same symptoms witch xenial, i.e. network-indicator showing no connetion/wired connetion/no Wi-Fi networks available while a fully working Wi-Fi connection exists, primarily after suspend/resume and/or switching between users.

Funny thing is, I don't see anything like this on a handful of other machines. Possible explanations:

1) Could be hardware-related. The laptop in question has a Qualcomm Atheros AR928X Wireless Network Adapter (PCI-Express) (rev 01).

2) The laptop in question is the only machine that is shared between more than one users with separate accounts.

Some additions:

-Happens on Lenovo T420s too. I don't think it is truly hardware related.

-Adding another user account and switching to and back leads to an even more arkward situation, where nm-applet creates a new connection if an already known WiFi network is selected (and asks for the password again). One can easily crate tens of connections by trying to connect again and again. It seems user rights on the connections may be the cause for this problem.
The same thing happes sometimes if nm-applet is just restarted. So I guess nm-applet is sometimes unable to read the whole state, and thus create new connections or don't reflect state.

So I would look for multi-user setups first to reproduce this bug.

On my Lenovo YOGA 300 it seems that the bug might be related with "time" or "weakening" of the WI-FI signal:

all works fine initially but then within tens of minutes the network icon and the Network itself goes OFF

I can give it a shake and reset it with the Network applet and the first few times the icon reflects the resetting but then it goes on Wired or NO-WIFI even if the network is fine and signal strength OK or GOOD.

The all thing deteriorates progressively since I get forced to reboot the system and the whole circle starts again

basem kheyar (basjam) wrote :

Restarting nm-applet fixes it for me every time.

Just to be clear about the issue:

WIFI works fine from a fresh boot, and after resume from suspend, it connects to any automatically configured network.

Problem (Issue):
1-After resume, nm-applet (network indicator) icon does one of the following randomly every time:
a- shows a wired connection icon.
       b- shows no connection icon.

In both cases (1-a or 1-b),
3- the wifi is connected and working. I Confirmed using a web browser.
4- the list doesn't show available wifi networks or the current connected network. It shows a "disconnect" button though

The main problem is that I cannot connect to a different wifi-network due to issue (4). And if for some reason I lost connection, I cannot reconnect.

restarting "network-manager.service" doesn't fix the issue for me.

Fix for me:
Restart nm-applet.

I used the following method:
1- run gnome-system-monitor.
2- in the processes tab, look for (nm-applet).
3- select it and press "End Process"
4- confirm "End Process" in the dialog.
5- start a terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) or press (Alt+F2)
6- type in "nm-applet" and enter

after the fix, the network-indicator shows the correct icon and signal strength for wifi. & in the list, I could see all available wifi connections.

More info:
lspci:

kernel: 4.8.0-37-generic
OS:Ubuntu 16.10, unity 7.5.0
Laptop make: Xiaomi-mi-notebook 12.5

Restarting (nm-applet) automatically after every suspend should (in theory) fix the problem. I don't know how to do that.... yet.

Please let me know if more information is missing as this is my first entry, and I'll add how to restart (nm-applet) automatically once I find out how to,

Basem.

basem kheyar (basjam) wrote :

I just realised that in step (5) of the fix I just mentioned above, running (nm-applet) from a terminal ties it to that terminal session. Then, closing the terminal closes (nm-applet).

Running it from (Alt+F2) avoids this issue,

Basem.

DannyDei (dei-bnb) wrote :

In my case the network indicators are now fine.

The problem is that the wi-fi goes to sleep within minutes and the restart comes back without any wi-fi signal at all. The only way out is to reboot.

The strange thing is that if I run https://fast.com/ the Net speed riches the highest values, while other sites stay blocked.

Another upsetting thing is that after some Ubuntu updates the system freezes within minutes from start and I can only use the previous kernel until a new, likely working, update.

I've been using:

killall nm-applet; nm-applet &

very regularly in the past couple of weeks when I've been using a different wifi router. I don't think this was happening to me in the past. Has anyone seen a change in behaviour, whether due to updates or change in usual physical location?

Another Thinkpad on the same network with the same install and kernel, an old X120e running an AMD cpu and a Realtek RTL8188CE wireless card, does *not* seem to exhibit this problem. i.e., nm-applet shows the correct icon and shows all available wifi APs after multiple suspend resume cycles.
