I have the same problem with an up-to-date gutsy install. My network is simple ethernet. The /etc/network/interfaces is what Ubuntu installed by default, i.e.
auto eth0 iface eth0 inet dhcp
and the same for lo, eth1, eth2, ath0 and wlan0.
