adonet, try also replacing the PPD file on your 9.04 machine by the PPD file from 8.10 (in /etc/cups/ppd/).

Execute

lpadmin -p HP-LaserJet-4000-2e -E -P Laserjet4000.ppd

in a terminal window.

Can you print again.
