This works with all (not too old, Snap must be supported) Ubuntu versions and many other distributions. It will also be regularly updated and the updates continue to work with the same wide range of distribution. Especially you can by this use an HPLIP which was released later than the release of your distro.
Support for the proprietary plugin and for scanning is in the works.
If you only need printing (and not scanning) functionality, you can also switch to the HPLIP Snap:
