Same issue on natty narwhal. The system freezes after inserting a cd/dvd. MagicSysRQ does not work.
I have removed the drive last week and built in an older cd-drive and now the system is stable.

From now on i cannot give bugrelated infos in the future. I think just throw this drive in the wastebasket an buy a better one.
