I have the same problem with a oem LG drive. It seems to be a bad firmware in some dvd-drives.

A workaround ist to buy a new drive for 20 Euro or Dollar or whatever and throw these buggy drives away.

A another workaround could be to blacklist these bad drives.

And finally the best would be to find out what is wrong.

The kernel should not completely freeze if the hardware is buggy !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
