I have an averatec 3715-eh1 and the following worked for me
sudo /etc/init.d/acpid stop sudo killall hald sudo /etc/init.d/acpid start sudo hald
the battery applet appears to work properly afterwards though this procedure needs to be repeated on each X session restart.
looks like a bug in how the various processes startup.
