The working is to remove or comment out any smbfs mounts in /etc/fstab
I commented out the line in /etc/fstab that was mounting a share of a Windows PC and then re-installed ubuntu-desktop (which got me back hal and gnome-volume-manager).
When I rebooted everything worked normally and the freezing problem I was having accessing images on my USB camera was also fixed.
I can do without smbfs for now. Should this bug be filed against smbfs?
I've found a better work around in this bug: https:/ /launchpad. net/distros/ ubuntu/ +source/ hal/+bug/ 37683
