I used the nomodeset fix above; it seems to work with 4 levels of brightness when adjusting using the fn keys. (I don't remember if 9.4 had 4 or 8 levels of brightness, but I'm leaning towards 4).
"for GRUB 2: edit /etc/default/grub and add nomodeset to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX, then run sudo update-grub.
for GRUB 1: edit /boot/grub/menu.lst and add nomodeset to the line beginning with # kopt=, then run sudo update-grub"
I've verified that flickering does not recur after sleep, and that display auto-dims when on battery power.
