Based on the duplicates for this bug, this issue is still present in gyp 0.1+20150913git1f374df9-1ubuntu1 on Ubuntu 17.04. I must admit I'm not quite sure, what's causing it, but the underlying issue seems to be this error message from DpkgTerminalLog.txt:
Setting up gyp (0.1~svn1729-3ubuntu1) ...
