I have this problem also, but only for ~3 days. Previously everything was working. The FTP server was not changed in any way, so I guess, there was an gvfs update?
Ubuntu 10.04, gvfs 1.6.1-ubuntu1build1, nautilus 1:2.30.1-0ubuntu1.1

Copying in terminal gives this:
~/.gvfs/FTP on 192.168.178.30/disk$ cp mydir ~/Desktop
cp: directory "mydir/" omitted
