Try it without the surrounding if-test, just use:
/bin/fusermount -zu "$HOME/.gvfs" 1>/dev/null 2>&1 || true
I fixed that myself, because the surrouding if-test will fail if the gvfs fuse-daemon has died, which unfortunately happens quite often.
