Confirmed, I just filed a bug about pulseaudio not working after logging in again. Perhaps a console-kit issue?.

I have long dropped the use of 'startx' but use straight GDM. Although many problems arose with it, namely SCIM the environment variables not being exported unless you fiddle with the files in /etc/X11/Xsession.d/.
