I'd like to add my own benchmark on Kubuntu Intrepid, hoping it'd help
I did it on 26/1/09 with a fully upgraded intrepid and I'm running the 32-it server kernel and KDE 4.2 btw.

Copying a 144 MB file to 3 usb devices

My USB1 card reader(pretty old)
automounted: 100 seconds(around 1.5 MB/s)
manually mounted: 96.7 seconds(around 1.6 MB/s)

A slightly newer mp3 player
automounted: 60 seconds(around 2.5 MB/s)
manually mounted: 54 seconds(around 2.8 MB/s)

A newer sandisk 4G flash drive
automounted: 23.7 seconds(around 6.4 MB/s)
manually mounted: 17.9 seconds(around 8.4 MB/s)

Fortunately the difference isn't very big(10-30%)... but there shouldn't be any.
