This bug is critical - it prevents normal usage of USB HDDs. I tried copying a not so large number of files (~500, total size ~500MB) FROM attached USB HDD (250GB) to computer. After fast copy of initial 40-80MB copying crawls at 0.7MB/s. The bug is not computer dependent - the same happens on Shuttle Pentium4 with SATA disks and Thinkpad T40. The same slowness was observed when copying from USB HDD partitions with fat16, ext3 and NTFS file systems. It is even worse, after some time of copying and stopping it the computer is unable to mount the disk without rebooting. The speed of copying TO USB HDD is much faster however. Both computers have fresh Hardy installed.
