I have a related problem: my Nexus S doesn't actually expose MTP, and so gvfs pops up an error dialog each time I plug it in
I checked, and this seems to have been already fixed upstream: (4e21 is the wrong id... 4e25 apparently is fine) http://sourceforge.net/p/libmtp/code/ci/master/tree/src/music-players.h
If current devices truly have a different id when they have MTP enabled or not, I think that Ubuntu on phablet should just be a good citizen, and change it as well
