Bug Description

I've been testing Ubuntu, Ubuntu GNOME,and Edubuntu Trusty in anticipation of Final Beta testing and I notice that Firewall Configuration no longer appears in the System Settings gui, nor in the flashback sessions tree-view.

Of course the gui can be launched using the dashboard in either unity or gnome-shell, or by using the terminal but I wondered if there was an oversight in allowing it to appear in System Settings which seemed like the perfect place for it.

Apologies in advance if this was done by design.

Pleaes, could you try this patch?
http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~robert-ancell/gui-ufw/unity-control-center/revision/100

In other way, that file changes between 13.10 & 14.04. Did It work for you in Ubuntu 13.10?
Ubuntu 14.04: http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~costales/gui-ufw/gufw-14.04/view/head:/gufw.desktop.in
Ubuntu 13.10: http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~costales/gui-ufw/gufw-13.10/view/head:/gufw.desktop.in

I'll be glad to do that but it may be 24 to 36 hours due to real-life issues.

I also imagine that I should cross-test Lubuntu and Xubuntu???

I'd be incredibly uncomfortable testing Kubuntu just because I'm so unfamiliar with it.

The proposed changes to gufw.desktop do allow it to now show in system settings, at least in an ubuntu session.

I have a little time this AM but where do I find "gufw.desktop.in"?

Erick you have to edit this file:

/usr/share/applications/gufw.desktop

The branch which resolves this bug is already merged in gufw trunk so soon it will land in Trusty.

Thanks Mateusz, that's what I needed, I was just unsure of the path_to_file :^)

Sorry to take so long getting back to this. What I've found:

(1) In Ubuntu or Edubuntu that edited file results in displaying Gufw in system settings in Unity as well as displaying Gufw in the flashback menus.

(2) In Ubuntu GNOME that edited file results in displaying Gufw in system settings using gnome-shell as well as displaying Gufw in the menus of either flashback or the "new" gnome-classic.

(3) In Lubuntu no change would be needed, but the new file causes no breakage either.

(4) Xubuntu throws a wrench in the works. Neither the existing file or the edited file results in Gufw appearing in the menus!

So I think we need to add something special just for Xubuntu :^(

Could someone please liaise with Xubuntu dev about this?

I think I could get Ubuntu GNOME dev to sponsor the fix but I hate to leave Xubuntu out of the loop.

Thanks a lot for your tests Erick!
Could you try to add this line to the file /usr/share/applications/gufw.desktop;

X-XFCE-Settings-Panel=firewall

Is working fine in Xubuntu then? Thanks!

I was wrong about Xubuntu! Sorry but I'm just not that familiar with the XFCE DE. GUFW does appear in Settings Manager both before and after applying the changes recommended in comment #2 ............. I just didn't know where to find it, sorry again :^(

Would you like me to ask Ubuntu GNOME dev to sponsor this patch?

Oh and, since I was wrong, I'm changing the summary back.

Hi! I tried today Xubuntu 14.04 beta2 and Gufw didn't appear in the menu
and just the name (not the icon) in the settings :O
Please, could more people confirm this in their Ubuntu flavors? Thanks in
advance!

Hmmm, I purged 'gufw' in Xubuntu Trusty (fresh install of Xubuntu 14.04 LTS "Trusty Tahr" - Beta i386 (20140326) performed on 2014-03-28) which completely removes "/usr/share/applications/gufw.desktop".

Then I reinstalled 'gufw' and retested now that I know where Firewall Configuration should appear, and with both the default "/usr/share/applications/gufw.desktop" and this patched version:

[Desktop Entry]
Name=Firewall Configuration
Comment=An easy way to configure your firewall
Categories=GNOME;System;Settings;X-GNOME-Settings-Panel;X-GNOME-SystemSettings;X-Unity-Settings-Panel;X-XFCE-SettingsDialog;X-XFCE-SystemSettings;
Exec=gufw
Icon=gufw
Terminal=false
Type=Application
X-GNOME-Settings-Panel=gufw.png
X-Unity-Settings-Panel=firewall
X-Ubuntu-Gettext-Domain=gufw

the GUI appears as shown in the attached screenshot.

Thanks a lot for your testing Erick!! I really appreciate it!
One more question please, is there the gufw icon in the normal application menu (top left corner)?
I'll leave this bug opened until the release ;)

@ costales,

I'm more than a bit confused.

In Xubuntu I only see Firewall Configuration if I open Settings Manager and I see no missing icons?

Should be
Categories=GNOME;System;Settings;Network;X-GNOME-Settings-Panel;X-GNOME-SystemSettings;X-Unity-Settings-Panel;X-XFCE-SettingsDialog;X-XFCE-SystemSettings;

Adding Network so it will appear in application menu if you use that Gnome Tweaks Extension. Otherwise, the GUFW does not appear in the application menu and appears only in the default location.

Hi Richard,

The current value is:

Categories=GNOME;GTK;Settings;Security;X-GNOME-Settings-Panel;X-GNOME-SystemSettings;X-Unity-Settings-Panel;X-XFCE-SettingsDialog;X-XFCE-SystemSettings;

Is OK then, isn't it?

Thanks in advance.
