from my personal experience the current gtranslator version in Ubuntu's repositories is almost unusable for translating po files. It lacks features and it has happened to me that it "adds" extra characters to strings, so its very buggy. Between having that and having a beta version which looks quite good already (I've been testing for the past weeks) I would prefer having the beta.
Maybe it would be a good idea to ask gtranslator developers if a stable release or a release candidate will be released sometime before jaunty feature freeze. I can do that if you want since I'm subscribed to gtranslator mailling list
