Bug Description

Steps to repeat bug.

Log in to KDE. Go to System Settings--->Personal--->Appearance--->GTK Styles and Fonts.

Make these changes:

GTK Styles: Use my KDE style in GTK applications

&

GTK Fonts: Use my KDE fonts in GTK applications.

Click on "Apply"

Close System Settings window and go on about your work. Lauch Firefox,
Thunderbird and some GTK2 applications and you'll find they nicely inherit the KDE look and feel.

But often times you will find the settings did not take. Other times they will
take.

Sometimes logging off KDE and logging back in locks them in.

But the worst part about gtk2-engines-gtk-qt is that after having utilized them in KDE (i.e. run some GTK2 apps or Firefox) you will find that later use of GNOME is virtually impossible.

To continue...

Log off KDE and log into GNOME.

See splash screen as normal.

Then see gnome-panel try to start and then immediately crash.

That process repeats itself indefinently and eventually stops, giving you a
blank screen.

All you can do then is kill X (sometimes that doesn't work either and you have to restart your computer) and log back into KDE and pretend GNOME doesn't exist. :-)

I actually like both GNOME and KDE and use both extensively but untill this gets fixed that's going to be impossible.

gtk2-engines-gtk-qt worked far better in hoary than in breezy.

Thanks for your bug report. Which version of gtk2-engines-gtk-qt do you use? Could you try to get a backtrace with the instructions on http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProgramCrash.

PS: Please don't change the 'Severity' settings, they are intended to prioritize the work of developers.

I'd be glad ot attempt a backtrace however, my Linux box will be out of commission for 10-14 days while I await shipment of a replacment video card. I will follow up here ASAP.

As far as changing severity settings goes, since it's my bug I figured I was entitled. :-)

Besides, it was my first bug report on Launchpad and I wasn't yet familliar with it. :-)

I should have correctly set the severity when I initially filed the report.

This bug renders GNOME immediately **USELESS** at startup. To me, that ranks a rather high priority don't you think?

A week or two after filing the report I figured out a workaround. I deleted my .gtk* files while in KDE, logged out of KDE and logged into GNOME. That does the trick but it has to be done prior to each time one logs out of KDE as the files are (of course) re-created.

FYI: It was (and still is due to lack of documentation) difficult to determine if I should file a bug report on bugzilla or Launchpad. Therefore, I initially filed this report on bugzilla. When a significant amount of time passed with no developer response, I learned of Launchpad and figured I should perhaps file the report here.

Therefore, to avoid potential duplicate work on the part of the developers, please reference: http://bugzilla.ubuntu.com/show_bug.cgi?id=18210

Thank you.

Well it's been a while since I filed the report.........

Oliver Grawert <email address hidden> was able to recreate it and even
mentioned possibly moving the package from main to Universe, because of
it. It's an upstream problem.

In addition (as previously stated) please see
https://bugzilla.ubuntu.com//show_bug.cgi?id=18210. I initially filed
the same report on Bugzilla and Lanuchpad because it wasn't clear (at
the time) where it was supposed to be filed....

Since that time I've noted the crash rarely occurs, but GNOME still gets
messed up because it looks as if GTK widgets are being rendered with the
current KDE theme. This causes strange behavior at times.

Usually I remember to delete the .gtk_qt_engine_rc and .gtkrc-2.0 files
before starting GNOME, thus alleviating the problem.

Of course you do then have to repeat the steps later in KDE to get the
KDE look and feel back in GTK apps.
