"Save File" window focuses on the working directory instead of the file name field by default

Bug Description

When saving a file, (File -> Save) a window pops up to chose the directory where you would like to save your file.

When typing the file name, it interprets this as searching in the current working directory.

The focus should be on the file name not searching the current folder. I can see how this can be useful for people who want to search a file to automatically populate the name field, and change its suffix, but I would give priority to the filename.

A choice can be made to make this a user preference.

In simplified actions:
Change from:
File > Save (click on name field) (enter filename) [ENTER]

Change To:
File > Save (enter filename) [ENTER]

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read "How to report bugs effectively" [WWW] http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at [WWW] http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

Richard, I am quite familiar with Simon Tatham's legendary bug reporting recommendations. I didn't think that my description was THAT bad (or incomplete), that it caused you to copy-paste your standard "you don't know how to post a bug" response. As for Ubuntu's Debugging procedures page, it is quite useful in situations when an application crashes or does not function properly, yet there are no instructions to debug many UI issues including Nautilus' Save window which all applications use in gnome.

That being said, in this particular case, this issue is not one that the end-user can solve no logs or output which will assist you in this process. I have taken the time to explain in detail what is wrong, and I do not believe that you took the time to read the bug report and test it on your end before prematurely marking it as incomplete. Please let me know if you would prefer screen shots or video capture for you to understand what I'm talking about here.

Thanks!

Please apply the fix for this to Ubuntu Gutsy 7.10, I have tested this on Ubuntu Hardy 8.04 and it seems to work well, placing the focus in the name field.

I appreciate your comments and I am sorry that you feel that my questions were inappropriate. With the information provided I couldn't be 100% sure of even what platform you were on, some of the bug reports are THAT vauge. A triagers job is to help develop and elaborate on a bug report so the developers have enough information to fix it.

The screen snapshot you provided gives enough information to mark this bug as confirmed as I have experienced the problem you are having personally... I have just tested the problem on an up to date hardy system and was unable to reproduce the problem by clicking file -> "Save as". Do you know of an application it does this consistently on?

Thanks,

Richard Seguin

I can confirm this. It can indeed be very annoying. The bug has been clarified enough and can be marked as Triaged.
