I don't use Ubuntu - I just follow these bug reports as a gthumb developer.

I import all the time using Fedora 8, using Canon cameras. It works fine there.

Sorry I can't be more helpful... perhaps you could run gthumb in gdb, if you know how, and see what portion of the code is triggering the message.
