I have re-installed precise on 2 different PC's and this issue has not re-occured. The codec app did pop up BEFORE I installed ubuntu-restricted-extras. I think I tried to go with what the default options were ticked and again had these above mentioned errors.

But after I installed restricted extras I am now able to play all the files I am trying to play. Not sure if this can be closed though. I want to re-install again and see what that error was.
