Bug Description

Binary package hint: ubuntu-desktop

This has been observed in Totem and gnome-games. The problem is, quite simply, due to jackd not being installed by default. It is a problem, since it looks really ugly and probably has some unwanted behind the scenes consequences.

Quick way to reproduce:
-In the terminal, run totem
-Open an audio file (or video file)
-When it begins playing, check for output on the terminal. Check for "sh: jackd: command not found".

That output seems to appear every time sound is played.

I am blaming this on ubuntu-desktop for now. Could be a dependency error with the gstreamer packages, though.

This is definitely a dependency of gstreamer's:
The same output appears running an audio output or input test with gstreamer-properties.

This is very annoying because 'finch' (the text-based version of pidgin) displays this message every time a sound is played. This messes up the display.
So I either have to turn the sounds off, and constantly switch over to the IM console to see if anyone messaged me, or put up with a scrambled display.

Installing jackd doesn't exactly fix my issue either.
Now I get: JACK tmpdir identified as [/dev/shm]

removing /usr/lib/gstreamer-0.10/libgstjack.so is solving the problem,
this is just as long as you do not intend to use jack with gstreamer.
this bug should be filed upstream to make sure that gstreamers jack plugin does not print this error message.

Aaron, I was having the same issue with finch. Here's how I've solved it: Firstly you need to open the sound preferences (e.g. with ALT + A). Then you need to select the method "Command". In the field "Sound command" you need to put in the following: "aplay -q %s" (without quotes).

Hope this helps.

Good luck!
Tim

I cannot reproduce this issue in Intrepid, and /usr/lib/gstreamer-0.10/libgstjack.so does not exist. There haven't been any reports of this issue since Gutsy. I am closing this issue as it appears to have been fixed.
