John, we may have figured out what is causing the issue. Could you please see if the "ubuntu-restricted-extras" package is installed on your machine? Installing that package may give your computer access to the "gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad" package. The GStreamer plugins are not included with Ubuntu by default due to licensing issues, but can be installed after installing the "ubuntu-restricted-extras" package, which contains some GStreamer plugins by default. After that package is installed, you should be able to install the "gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad" package without a problem using whatever method you choose. Hopefully this will work so you won't have to use the .deb file I mentioned in the last comment.
