I would agree that scanner support is the responsibility of the manufacturer, except that my system ran perfectly until I upgraded from 18.04 to 20.04.1. So whatever the manufacturer supplied used to work, but the upgrade broke it. It seems to me that in this situation, Ubuntu ought to try to fix it.
