I've constructed a reproduction case and have asked Vladimir (upstream) to have a look at it. It's currently here:

'grub-fstest `pwd`/btrfs-broken.img cp /@/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.38-8-generic-pae x' fails with this image, although Linux's btrfs driver seems to have no problems.
