I don't have my test computer with me, and I don't want to try it on my netbook (I need it functional for work while I am away) until I can confirm that there is a grub prompt involved. The only feedback I've had couldn't recall selecting any drives, so I am not sure if this runs behind the scenes with the grub-pc update or whether it displays the familiar 'select a drive/partition to install to' prompt.
When testing, you might want to try with the wubi on a different partition than windows. It's a theory of mine, that grub-pc recognizes a wubi install when it finds wubildr in /host/, but when wubi is installed to another partition the wubildr is on the windows partition and not in /host (based on my findings with this bug report: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lupin/+bug/604417).
Thanks Erick.

So that's what I'd be looking at.
