/etc/default/grub

Thanks for the file. The error is at line
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=”ipv6.disable=1 quiet splash”

That's not the right quotes. It should be
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="ipv6.disable=1 quiet splash"

” is not the same as "
Change that line and try performing the upgrade again.

It's not the only report showing this kind of error, and something is changing the quotes to the wrong ones when updating the default grub configuration.

Hello, I got this same bug. I think it started some time ago when I tried to fix a splash screen error. I read a tutorial on how to do it but I did something wrong...Since then, I'm getting this error when updating, or installing new programs...Then I read this post:
http://www.ubuntu-es.org/node/135772

The first response there talks about something related to /etc/default/grub

In my case, i had a syntax error, using a ” instead of " The quotation marksare diferents, the first one is like italic, the second one should be the right one

example:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=”quiet splash nomodeset video=uvesafb:mode_option=1366x768
instead of
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash nomodeset video=uvesafb:mode_option=1366x768

In my case, this solved the issue. I'm not sure if this would work for all cases.
