I think the same as rmilson. This bug appeared to me when I installed Ubuntu 9.10, booted from Windows 7 and then rebooted on Linux. No grub-pc upgrading was performed. I don´t think it should be marked as a duplicate.

But I think I´ve solved it removing Dell Datasafe Local Backup, so I think the problem is with that Dell application, not with grub-pc itself.
