This is interesting about the possibility that grub 2.06 might be the "solution" to the problem. Today I'm in LM 29.1 MATE (focal based) and synaptic shows only grub 2.04 as "available" . . . .
I'll have to check my hirsute Lubuntu install in a day or so, but so far all "ubuntu" editions of grub have only selected themselves to boot up, no menu option list provided.
