Looks like the error message does still appear every now and then.
Must have something to do with the '/boot/grub/grubenv' file, which gets recreated upon each boot.

The code snippet posted by "AcCEsS" above (cf. comment #7) must be responsible for the error, though I have no idea what it is trying to test for.
