I have solved this issue with a variation of the method of comment #79
First you do it exactly as in 79. then after reboot you set back GRUB_DEFAULT=0 and update-grub. After a reboot everything should work again.
As a side note these are the things that will keep ppl away from using ubuntu. Errors after updates, or installing propriety drivers failed installings etc. that screw up the system. Enough said.
