As a side note, I just found why my Sony Vaio SVS1511L3ES had this problem (had because I just fixed it ;-)

Sony is using the crappy Insyde H2O UEFI that has no UEFI boot menu. It always uses whatever it finds under /boot/efi/EFI/Microsoft/Boot/bootmgfw.efi. When I installed Ubuntu 12.10 in December 2012, I copied the GRUB grubx64.efi to that path. Upgrading to 13.04 and 13.10 went without problems and I forgot about the hack until now.

With Ubuntu 14.04, one has to copy grubx64.efi again. Problem fixed. I doubt Boot-Repair knows this little trick, but I haven't checked.
