This definitely is a serious issue. I spent 6-8 hours trial and error getting a new PC with EFI bios to single-boot Ubuntu 13.10 (still don't know exactly which of my numerous changes in boot-repair that made the difference). So, after updating to 14.04 this morning, "boot hell" was back with "error: symbol 'grub_term_highlight_color' not found". Relying on boot-repair to fix the issue has only gotten me back to the problem I had with 13.10 and grub2 menu not even loading. Just a message saying "No disk or disk has failed". Still haven't been able to resolve the issue.
Not having a setup program that properly handles boot issues on a modern PC is unacceptable and will surely prevent me from recommending Ubuntu to anyone as long as this cannot be fixed without extensive knowledge about grub, boot records etc.
