Adam,
Apologies, I had fixed the problem by the time you posted and I didn't realise outputs from those commands would have been helpful. Thanks for taking the time to try and sort the issue.

Philip,
I installed my system from scratch a few months ago with Saucy. I applied updates as they came up and upgraded to Trusty this morning when offered by the system using the built-in ugrader. Grub was installed and working fine on my disk before I upgraded. Post reboot, all I got was a grub shell and the reported error. I don't know what you're referring to about grub-pc/install_devices and how or why I would change it. I haven't changed disk configs since I installed.

If this isn't a defect in the software, I don't know what is. It may be because of a few unlikely elements coming together. It may not actually be a problem with the grub package so the bug should be refiled. But there is certainly a problem somewhere - and it's a big one.

Dismissing people so vigourously when they report a bug is pretty disappointing. It's certainly put me off ever trying to assist with a bug again. I can fix the error myself but I've been encouraged by Ubuntu devs I know to help with bug reporting so that the overall quality of the software improves and new users don't have quite such a steep learning curve and will see Linux as a real alternative.

But I obviously have a naive view of the community - the priority is to close bugs saying why they shouldn't have been filed in the first place.
