same problem here. upgraded from 13.10, now this error. i did not do anything with grub, only "do-release-upgrade".

booting with a stick, chroot'ed /dev/sda1 and did a

dpkg-reconfigure grub-pc

but nothing changes. problem exists.

anything else what can be done?
