@Scott: Regarding mounting from the terminal, Linux inherited terseness from UNIX so only gives messages when commands don't work. "df -h" should show whether you mounted OK. Regarding "dpkg-reconfigure grub-pc", your sda and sda5 and other answers look good to me, could you have EFI rather than MBR boot? What do you see when you run "sudo efibootmgr -v"?
@psusi: Is anyone looking at what is causing this problem or do you somehow regard it as user error? It seems odd that previous upgrades seem to have avoided this problem - did the developer toss out what he thought was unnecessary code for this release?
